The DD is a security code that identifies where and when the license was issued. A number of states started adding this piece of information to their drivers licenses several years ago. DD is an abbreviation for Document Discriminator. I have included a link to the NY authority that displays images below. The table below shows the state along with the most common License Format. The document number is an 8 or 10 digit alphanumeric number found either on the back of the license or lower right hand corner (depending on the year of your license). Per federal law, the SSN has been phased out as a driver license number. It does not include the driver’s license number. It uniquely identifies each card that was issued to a given individual. When ordering Motor Vehicle Records, PSP Reports or CDLIS Reports it’s important to obtain a photo copy of the driver’s license as many states will not return a report if the Driver’s Name or License number do not match what is in their system.
